The atmosphere
El Médano is a Canarian seaside town on the south coast of Tenerife, born before tourism. Its central square opens straight onto the beach, the shopping streets start from there, and the wooden boardwalk follows the shore to the Montaña Roja. Its golden-sand beaches are the longest on the island, and the reserve that surrounds them is not built on.
You get around on foot or by bike. Kitesurfers occupy the water for a good part of the year, Canarian families come on Sundays, and remote workers fill the cafés during the week. The square comes to life every evening without the town taking on the look of a resort.

The town covers everyday needs: a market, independent shops, schools, a health centre, and restaurants whose choice has widened in recent years. The South airport is seven minutes away, the shortest distance on the island, which counts if you split your year between Tenerife and Europe.
The market is tight: demand from year-round residents and from European buyers exceeds a supply that can barely grow, since the town is ringed by protected land. Apartments near the square, town houses and a few villas are fought over by the same buyers. Homes facing the sea reach the price levels of the west coast.
El Médano suits sports enthusiasts, families and remote workers who prefer a seaside town to a resort. You have to accept the wind, which blows mainly in the afternoon and in summer, and short decision times when buying. Parking in the centre becomes difficult in summer.
